Every dawn brings horror to a different family in a land ruled by a killer. Khalid, the eighteen-year-old Caliph of Khorasan, takes a new bride each night only to have her executed at sunrise. So it is a suspicious surprise when sixteen-year-old Shahrzad volunteers to marry Khalid. But she does so with a clever plan to stay alive and exact revenge on the Caliph for the murder of her best friend and countless other girls. Shazi’s wit and will, indeed, get her through to the dawn that no others have seen, but with a catch . . . she’s falling in love with the very boy who killed her dearest friend.

She discovers that the murderous boy-king is not all that he seems and neither are the deaths of so many girls. Shazi is determined to uncover the reason for the murders and to break the cycle once and for all.

Review

Khalid volunteers to become the wife of Caliph of Khorasan. The Caliph of Korasan takes a new wife every night and kills them at dawn. One of these unlucky victims was Shiva, Khalid's best friend. Determined to seek revenge for the killing of her best friend Khalid is determined to learn the secrets and mystery behind the notorious Caliph. The Calipha of Korasan has a plan and it does not include dying.

This story is interesting. Right away it reminded me of A Thousand and One Nights. I did think it got a little slow in the middle but it picked up at the end. I wish there would of been more explanation of the magic. I want to know more about the magic carpet!

I liked the mystery behind the story. Why was the Caliph of Korasan killing young girls at dawn? This really keeps you intrigued and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

3.5/5

Quotes

And, though I do feel . . . anxious in your presence, the more I see of everything around me, the less I have reason to fear you.”

For love, people consider the unthinkable . . . and often achieve the impossible.

You see, I wanted to know where stars went when they fell. I ran and ran until I could run no more. And still I could not see where the stars went.”

It was one thing to return his kiss; she’d been prepared for that. But it was another thing entirely to want his kiss . . . another thing entirely to desire his affections.

For this was a kiss of definition. A kiss of understanding. For a marriage absent pretense. And a love without desgin.
