West Hall, Vermont, has always been a town of strange disappearances and old legends. The most mysterious is that of Sara Harrison Shea, who, in 1908, was found dead in the field behind her house just months after the tragic death of her daughter.

Now, in present day, nineteen-year-old Ruthie lives in Sara’s farmhouse with her mother, Alice, and her younger sister. Alice has always insisted that they live off the grid, a decision that has weighty consequences when Ruthie wakes up one morning to find that Alice has vanished. In her search for clues, she is startled to find a copy of Sara Harrison Shea's diary hidden beneath the floorboards of her mother's bedroom. As Ruthie gets sucked into the historical mystery, she discovers that she’s not the only person looking for someone that they’ve lost. But she may be the only one who can stop history from repeating itself.

Review

I think I was in a reading slump until I picked up this title. Thank you again Book Riot for a wonderful recommendation. This book did not disappoint. The Winter People captured my attention right away and pulled me into a scary and creepy world of the dead.

I usually do not care for thrillers but this was definitely unique. It was scary enough that when I was reading all curled up in bed one night I did not even want to get up to retrieve my nightly ice cream sandwich from the freezer. I did eventually get up to get my snack but of course all the blinds in the kitchen were still open and it was dark outside. I have never closed the blinds so fast!

I highly recommend this title. I really loved it because it was scary but not gross or excessively violent. I think I am going to look into some of Jennifer McMahon's other title too. Happy reading!!
